Starting preschool is a big milestone. These ten practical tips help your child feel confident, independent and ready to thrive at our Ofsted Outstanding nursery in Buckshaw Village.

Starting preschool is an exciting milestone for children and parents alike. It marks the beginning of a wonderful journey of learning, growth and new friendships. As with any big change, a little preparation goes a long way in helping your child settle happily. At The Hub at Buckshaw, our Ofsted rated Outstanding team has welcomed local families since 2011, and we know how much a smooth start matters. Here are our top ten tips for preparing your child for preschool.
Ten ways to prepare your child
- Foster independence. Encourage your child to practise self-care skills such as dressing, putting on shoes and using the toilet. Small everyday tasks like these boost their confidence and reduce their reliance on adult help, so they feel more capable when they are away from home.
- Establish a routine. A consistent sleep pattern and a predictable daily schedule help children feel secure. Introducing regular meal, play and rest times at home makes it much easier for your child to adapt to the structure of the preschool day.
- Encourage socialisation. Arrange playdates and group activities so your child can practise sharing, taking turns and communicating with other children. These social skills are a big part of a happy and successful preschool experience.
- Read together. Reading with your child every day supports early literacy and language, and it sparks their imagination and curiosity. A shared story is also a lovely, calm way to spend time together and build a love of learning.
- Practise communication. Help your child learn to express their needs and ask for help. Simple role-play, such as pretending to ask a teacher for a drink, builds the confidence they need to speak up with staff and friends at preschool.
- Explore the outdoors. Nature walks and time outside prepare children for the outdoor play and sensory activities that are part of nursery life. Exploring the world around them builds curiosity and a sense of adventure.
- Encourage creativity. Offer art supplies, craft materials and plenty of pretend play. Creative activities help children express themselves, solve problems and engage actively, all skills that support learning through play in our curriculum.
- Visit the preschool. Touring the setting and meeting the team before the first day helps reduce anxiety about a new environment. Familiar faces and surroundings make that first morning feel far less daunting for your child.
- Discuss expectations. Talk to your child about what preschool will be like, from following simple instructions to joining in with group activities. Knowing what to expect helps them feel calm and prepared.
- Maintain open communication. Stay in regular contact with your child's key person and educators. Working together means we can support your child's development consistently at home and at nursery.
Every child is unique
Remember that every child is different, and there is no single right way to prepare for preschool. Some children stride in on day one, while others need a little more time to settle, and both are perfectly normal. Adapt these tips to suit your child's personality and pace, and trust your instincts as a parent. Our team is always here to offer reassurance and guidance along the way.
